What is Semax?
Semax is a synthetic peptide derived from a fragment of the hormone ACTH, developed and used in Russia as a nootropic and for neurological conditions. It is not approved by the FDA.
What the evidence shows
Most Semax research has been conducted in Russia and is not part of the evidence base recognized by the FDA. Independent, large-scale trials supporting the uses under review are lacking.
Is it legal?
Semax is not FDA-approved. In April 2026 it was removed from FDA Category 2 but not moved to the approved Category 1 list, so legal compounding is not authorized; the PCAC reviews it on July 24, 2026.
